Around Kivuko eco camp
Game Drives
Visitors have the option to go on organized game drives or self-guided excursions into the conservancy to observe wildlife. Both morning and evening game drives are available, led by knowledgeable guides who can spot the over 50 species of large mammals and 300 varieties of birds that inhabit the area. If guests prefer to venture out on their own, a guide can accompany them to offer direction and expertise while still allowing freedom to explore at their own pace. Whether joining a planned tour or customizing their own adventure, nature lovers will revel in sightings of animals in their natural habitat.
Birding
The Taita Wildlife Conservancy is a bird watcher's paradise, home to over 300 avian species. Some of the most prolific birds found here include the Somali Ostrich, White-faced Whistling-Duck, Fulvous Whistling-Duck, Egyptian Goose, Spur-winged Goose, Red-billed Duck, Southern Pochard and the Knob-billed Duck. Visitors can experience spectacular sights, especially at dusk, when eagles and other birds take to the skies. With experienced guides lending their sharp eyes, birding enthusiasts are guaranteed excellent spottings across a variety of species. The sweet, vivid melodies of birdsong provide a symphony to delight the ears and stir visitors' imaginations.
Astrotourism
Few sights compare to the glory of the night sky illuminated in all its brilliance. For the optimal stargazing experience, journey the Taita Wildlife Conservancy offers optimal Dark Sky experience for unparalleled celestial displays. We have some of the most wondrous night skies on display.
Community Visits
Near the conservancy, you can visit widows, take a tour of their greenhouses, and learn about the basket weaving that is done by the women in the community. You can also take part in tree planting in neighborhood schools, which is a great way to give back to the community.
Sundowner Kivuko Hill
Kivuko Hill is a short 10-minute walk from your accommodation. It is a great place to enjoy a sundowner due to its elevation and dramatic views of the conservancy. Our guests can pack up some drinks and snacks, follow a guide to the top of the hill, and enjoy one of the most remarkable sundowners they have ever had.
Hike & Trek
The Taita Wildlife Conservancy offers stunning scenery for hiking and trekking adventures. Guests can traverse terrain that varies from dry savannas to towering hillsides. Walking safaris allow visitors to immerse themselves in Tsavo's wildlife and wilderness, experiencing the floral and faunal ecosystems up close. These thrilling, dramatic excursions foster an exceptional oneness with nature and a deeper understanding of the diverse landscapes within the conservancy.
Mountain Climbing
Mt. Kasigau and the towering Taita Hills are part of the ancient Eastern Arc Mountains range that stretches from northeastern Tanzania into southwestern Kenya. Formed over 100 million years ago by the seismic shifts of the Great Rift Valley, these mountains are now recognized as one of the top 20 most biodiverse regions on Earth.
At 1,650 meters above sea level, Mt. Kasigau can be summited in a 6 to 8 hour hike via the Rukanga route, which is conveniently accessible from the Taita Wildlife Conservancy.
